We are seeking a Farm Accountant to join a dynamic, multi-enterprise farming business in Shropshire. Based in the farm office, you will oversee accounts across a range of operations, manage inter-company transactions, and support bookkeeping and administrative functions across the business. With a strong background in accountancy and administration, you will quickly become an integral part of the team, contributing across all areas of the business, including arable farming, poultry operations, anaerobic digestion, property rentals, and sporting enterprises. You will be joining a supportive, family-run business where you will receive training and guidance, along with the opportunity to shape and develop the role as the business continues to grow. Flexible working is available, with both part-time and full-time hours considered. The position would suit a proactive and highly organised self-starter who is comfortable working autonomously and enjoys a varied role.
The Company: A long-established, multi-generational family farming enterprise, operating large-scale arable, poultry, and renewable-energy ventures while partnering with multiple farms through contract-farming arrangements. Role Responsibilities:
- Manage bookkeeping and accounting across multiple companies and the partnership, processing inter-company transactions and invoicing
- Process payroll for approximately 18-20 employees (using PAYE systems)
- Prepare VAT returns and manage partial exemption calculations
- Manage accounts payable and receivable, including contract farming invoicing
- Maintain property rental accounts and quarterly utility billing
- Process end-of-crop accounts for poultry operations
- Prepare management information and respond to audit queries
- Liaise with external accountants and consultancy firms
- Manage credit control and debt collection where necessary
- Provide general office administration, including setting up bank accounts, managing utilities, council tax arrangements, and maintaining contract templates and employment documentation
- Support directors with financial decision-making and tax planning considerations
Skills you will need:
Essential:
- A strong accounting knowledge and principles (qualified by experience or qualification)
- Experience with payroll administration, including P11Ds
- Excellent understanding of inter-company accounting
- Highly organised with meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to cross-checking work
- The ability to work independently and use one’s own initiative
- Strong logical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to build relationships with farmers and contractors
- Proactive, inquisitive mindset with willingness to ask questions and seek answers
- Comfortable working across a varied role, balancing core accounting responsibilities with wider administrative duties
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and responsive to the evolving needs of the business
- Proficient in IT skills
- UK driving licence
Desirable:
- Experience with Xero accounting software
- Knowledge or understanding of agriculture and farming operations
- Experience with farm management software
- Understanding of VAT partial exemption
- Previous audit experience
- Familiarity with contract farming arrangements
