We are seeking a highly motivated, driven, and proactive individual to join our client’s team as a Trainee Livestock Buyer. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to build a long-term career within the livestock and food production industry, gaining valuable hands-on experience in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. Based at our client’s site in the West Midlands, the role offers a unique blend of supplier engagement, commercial exposure, and operational responsibility, with a strong focus on maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare and production efficiency. Working closely with the Livestock Procurement Manager, the successful candidate will demonstrate a genuine enthusiasm to learn, strong attention to detail, and the confidence and interpersonal skills required to build and maintain effective relationships with farmers, suppliers, and key stakeholders, while supporting the efficient procurement of livestock. Role Responsibilities:
- Support the Procurement Manager in the procurement of livestock in line with production requirements and customer demand to maintain a consistent and reliable supply
- Work closely with agents, farmers, and suppliers to coordinate deliveries and assist with volume forecasting
- Participate in farm visits to aid livestock selection, build strong relationships with farmers, and develop an understanding of pricing and negotiation processes
- Maintain accurate records and performance data
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and farm assurance schemes
- Collaborate with internal teams to contribute to a smooth, efficient, and well-managed supply chain
Skills you will need:
Essential:
- A knowledge and understanding of livestock production systems
- An interest in supply chain management
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Organised with a strong eye for detail
- A collaborative team player
- Confident in building and maintaining strong working relationships with farmers and key stakeholders
- Motivated, adaptable, and responsive to changing business needs
- Resilient, able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Proactive and committed to continuous learning and professional development
- Proficient in IT systems
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable:
- An understanding of lairage and abattoir operations
