A long-awaited review into farm profitability has finally been published, setting out recommendations aimed at improving fairness and transparency across the UK food supply chain.
The review, led by former NFU president Minette Batters, examines the financial pressures facing farm businesses and explores how farmers can secure better returns for the food they produce. Key themes include the need for clearer contracts, improved data transparency and stronger enforcement of fair dealing rules between farmers, processors and retailers.
Industry leaders have welcomed the publication of the review after months of anticipation, describing it as an important acknowledgment of the imbalance many farmers face. However, there are calls for the government to move quickly from words to action, with farming groups warning that without meaningful implementation, many businesses will continue to struggle under rising costs and tight margins.
The report adds to growing pressure on policymakers to ensure farmers are properly rewarded for producing food, maintaining landscapes and supporting rural economies.
