TIREDNESS: THE HIDDEN RISK

When we think about farm safety, we often picture machinery, livestock, working at height, or overhead power lines. These hazards are real and deserve constant attention. However, one of the biggest dangers on farms is far less visible: tiredness.

Across agriculture, and particularly contracting, long hours have become normal. Weather windows are short, workloads are never-ending, labour remains difficult to find, and financial pressures continue to mount. Yet fatigue can impair judgement, slow reaction times and increase the likelihood of mistakes, making it a significant contributor to accidents. As we start harvest and move seamlessly into cultivations, maize etc., it is important to recognise the importance of taking a break.

The challenge is that tiredness rarely feels like an immediate danger. Most people believe they can push through for another hour or finish one more job before taking a break. Unfortunately, accidents often happen precisely at those moments when concentration begins to slip.

This is why the NAAC’s “I Am Vital to UK Agriculture – Stay Safe” campaign is so important. The campaign uses simple stickers placed in prominent locations to provide a visual prompt that encourages people to stop, think and make safer decisions.

We recognise that a sticker alone will not save lives, but want to make everyone just stop and think before taking unnecessary risks. The campaign encourages a positive safety culture and reminds everyone that they are vital both to the industry and to the people waiting for them at home.

A sticker on a tractor dashboard, a ladder, a workshop door or even beside a coat hook can serve as a valuable reminder. If it encourages someone to take a break, wear a helmet or switch off machinery before clearing a blockage, then it has already made a difference.

It’s never easy when under work pressure to take a break but, before reaching for the next can of energy drink, we should all perhaps just consider how pushing on may impact on the business if something goes wrong. Safety is everyone’s responsibility, so let’s at least challenge the culture that accepts exhaustion as part of the job and recognise that protecting ourselves is not a sign of weakness but professionalism.
