An inspirational farmer taking on a 142-mile fundraising walk during Mind Your Head Week has received a significant boost from the Prince of Wales.
On Monday, February 9, Sam Stables, a sheep farmer from Herefordshire and founder of rural mental health charity We Are Farming Minds, set off from Ross-on-Wye market on foot. His aim is to shine a national spotlight on the pressures facing the farming community while raising funds for the National Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs as part of Yellow Wellies’ Mind Your Head Week.
The challenge will see him cover 142 miles, finishing at the Farmers’ Club in London today (Friday, February 13th). Along the way, he has been supported by members of the rural community, with farmers and supporters turning out to cheer him on and donate to the cause.
Originally setting out to raise £1,420, the fundraiser has already surpassed £30,000, reflecting the strength of feeling around mental health support within agriculture.
Among those backing the challenge is Prince William, who donated £5,000 to the fundraiser. In a message of encouragement, he said:
“Keep going, Sam! You’re doing an amazing job! Thinking of you, W.”
The walk highlights the growing conversation around mental wellbeing in farming and the importance of ensuring support is available for the next generation entering the industry.
