As farm margins continue to tighten, a new Severn Trent smart water meter pilot will help farmers across the Midlands spot leaks faster, helping them to save money.
More than 100 farms across Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and Shropshire are set to benefit from smart water meters for the first time, helping to strengthen water resilience and support local farm businesses.
Those taking part in the pilot have been chosen based on water demand and usage patterns, helping the scheme deliver the greatest impact.
The meters will be installed over the summer, helping Severn Trent build a clearer picture of water use across the region while enabling farmers to identify potential leaks sooner, cut unnecessary water loss and support more sustainable long-term use.
Claire Rabbitt, Severn Trent’s Non-Household Smart Metering Workstream Manager, said: “We’re really pleased to be working with farmers on this pilot and to bring in technology that can make a practical difference on the ground.
“Smart meters will help farmers in the pilot spot possible leaks sooner, reduce water loss and use water more efficiently,” she says.
Severn Trent will contact selected farms in the coming weeks and will also hold face-to-face events across the region, giving farmers the chance to meet the team, ask questions and find out more about how the pilot will work.
All data will be collected securely and handled responsibly, giving farmers confidence that their information is protected.
