Farmers in Wales and southwest England are being urged to watch for hemlock water-dropwort after seven cattle were discovered dead in a field.
Tyndale Vets have sounded alarms that the plant’s toxicity, exacerbated by drought and low ditch water levels, is increasingly putting grazing livestock at risk.
Early signs of poisoning, such as rapid breathing, teeth grinding, or muscle weakness, can quickly escalate, and there is no available treatment.
Farmers are being encouraged to inspect pastures and ditch areas closely for the plant and wear protective gloves when removing any suspect vegetation.
