Livestock farmers in England are being encouraged to take advantage of government-funded veterinary visits after Defra and the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) published a new step-by-step guide explaining how to apply.
The guidance supports the Improve Animal Health and Welfare grant, which provides direct payments for veterinary reviews, diagnostic testing and follow-up visits designed to reduce endemic disease, improve productivity and raise animal welfare standards.
Available to eligible cattle, sheep and pig keepers, the scheme allows farmers to choose their own vet to carry out an Animal Health and Welfare Review. During the visit, vets can carry out disease testing, provide tailored advice on improving herd or flock health, discuss ways to increase productivity and identify other priorities specific to the farm.
Following the initial review, farmers can also apply for an Endemic Disease Follow-up, allowing vets to undertake more detailed disease testing, biosecurity assessments and provide practical recommendations to help prevent disease and improve long-term animal health.
Funding is available per livestock species rather than per animal, with farmers able to claim up to three reviews and three follow-up visits per eligible species before June 2027. Payments cover the cost of the vet’s time, diagnostic testing and the farmer’s time.
The newly published guidance from Defra and the RPA walks applicants through the process step by step, making it easier for livestock keepers to access the available funding.
The grant remains open until 19 June 2027, giving eligible farmers plenty of time to apply.
