With Bonfire Night fast approaching, the RSPCA is calling on farmers and livestock owners to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe and calm during fireworks season.
The charity’s welfare experts say that sudden loud bangs and bright flashes can cause serious distress to livestock, leading to panic, injury, and even loss of life in severe cases. They’re reminding farmers to take proactive steps such as bringing animals indoors where possible, checking fencing and housing for damage, and keeping feed and bedding topped up to create a calm environment.
The RSPCA is also urging the public to be mindful of animals in rural areas by attending organised displays rather than setting off fireworks near fields or smallholdings.
The charity’s Assured scheme, which works with farmers committed to high welfare standards, has shared practical advice for livestock keepers – from adjusting routines to playing background noise that can help mask sudden sounds.
Firework season runs from late October through to New Year’s Eve, meaning farmers may need to stay prepared for several weeks of sporadic noise.
Farmers can find detailed guidance and welfare advice on the RSPCA Assured website.
