From 2026, new requirements will come into force for the purchase and use of professional rodenticides. Anyone using professional rodenticides including farmers and land managers will need to hold a recognised certification gained within the last five years, unless they are registered with an approved Continuing Professional Development (CPD) scheme.
One of the most widely recognised qualifications is the RSPH Level 2 Award in the Safe Use of Rodenticides. This course provides essential knowledge to ensure rodenticides are used responsibly and effectively. The course covers key areas such as rodent biology and behaviour, enabling users to better understand infestation patterns, as well as the correct and legal use of rodenticides.
Importantly, the qualification also highlights the risks associated with rodent control, particularly to non-target wildlife, pets, and the wider environment. By improving awareness and application, the training supports best practice and helps reduce the risk of secondary poisoning.
The course is approved by the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) and is available both online and in person, offering flexibility for busy farming schedules. Ensuring compliance not only meets legal obligations but also demonstrates a commitment to safe, sustainable pest control practices.
